What is Impulse zine?
Impulse Zine was founded by two creatives Denzel Amoah and Ivory Henry in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Denzel Amoah extends his creativity not only through multiple art forms like photography and design, but through a vast knowledge of sociology. Ivory Henry is a multidisciplinary artist whose work spans the mediums of graphic design, paint, and textiles. Impulse Zine Started off as publication to showcase local black and brown art and thought. The first publication titled “On Wheels” and was a way for artists of color to control the ways in which they were displayed in local print media, despite either lack of or biased representation within mainstream media. A major part of reclaiming narratives within local media was through social media. The Instagram page serves as an archive to display black history through art by displaying images found on the internet curated by Mbake Sarr.
Impulse Zine eventually grew into intentional spaces that center all black and brown identities. These spaces originally started off as small free raves at The Bridge that featured music from a plethora of genres played by local and Boston based DJ’s. As Impulse continues to evolve, we believe that there is an importance to provide space for these voices to be amplified as well as protected. We’d love to be a force that is heard without having to be put in a box by white institutionalism. To dismantle institutionalism we must come together and collaborate, especially with other local organizations to uplift and serve BIPOC. This means building relationships, providing support, and altogether being a positive entity. In the near future, we are hoping to expand on our creative endeavors through all forms of mediums, so stay tuned!
